Keep a sub pool and choose how subs affect standings
Add the people who fill in for your league to a sub pool on the division, then pick them from a list whenever a player can't make a week. How a sub's rounds count toward standings and ladder movement is set once for the whole division in Event Settings, not on each sub.
You need to be a host or club admin for the event to manage the pool and these settings.
Add people to the sub pool
A sub in the pool is kept on the division's roster only so you can pick them. They never take a spot, are never counted in capacity or opt-in totals, are never placed in a group or seated in a generated round, and don't receive announcements.
Go to the Host Dashboard and open the Players tab.
Open the menu next to the search bar and choose Add Player.
Choose Add Individual Player, or Add Multiple Players to paste several names at once.
Under Add as (or Add these as), select Sub.
Find the person's account, or add them as a guest. A sub's email is optional.
Save.
Subs appear in their own Subs section under the division on the Players tab, with a count of how many are available. Use the pencil to edit a sub's details, or the trash icon to remove them from the pool.
A few rules apply:
Team events have no sub pool. The Sub option doesn't appear for team events such as MLP, which use free agents instead.
One role per person per division. Someone can't be both a player and a sub in the same division.
Subs aren't charged. If your club collects payments at the front desk, adding a single sub still offers you the option to collect.
Bulk adds take names only. To link an account or add a DUPR ID, add that sub one at a time or edit them afterward.
Assign a sub to a player's weeks
Generate the round first. A sub is assigned to matches, so the dialog has nothing to assign until the matches exist.
On the Players tab, tap the swap icon next to the player who is out.
In Substitute Name, pick someone from the division's pool. Picking a sub fills in their saved DUPR ID. Typing a new name adds that person to the pool.
Optionally set a Points Deduction.
Under Select Dates for Substitute, tick the weeks the sub covers.
Tap Register.
The player gets a SUB badge, and the sub is recorded in that player's slot on each covered match. The sub is never added as a player of their own.
A sub can fill in for only one player per round. If you tick a week where they already cover someone else, we show who they're already subbing for and leave that week unticked.
Leave Sub DUPR ID blank if you don't know it. Matches played by a sub with no DUPR ID are left out of your DUPR upload rather than uploaded under the wrong player. To run a different sub each week for the same player, see Assign different substitutes for different weeks or rounds.
In Ladder League, Up and Down the River, Humpty Dumpty, Crazy 8's, Cream of the Crop and Pecking Order, a regenerated round keeps its subs. In other formats, regenerating a round clears them, so open the swap icon again and tap Update to reapply the sub.
Choose how sub rounds count toward standings
These settings apply to every sub in the division. A sub's results always count in full for the opponents they played.
Go to Settings on the Host Dashboard, then Event Settings.
Open Substitute Standings for the division.
Set the two switches below, then tap Apply.
If the event is part of a series, you're asked whether to apply the change to this event only, to this and following events, or to all upcoming events.
Count substitute results
This is on by default, and a sub's rounds add to the standings of the player they filled in for. Turn it off when a round played by a sub shouldn't count for the rostered player.
When it's off, who gets skipped depends on the format:
Format | What happens in a round a sub played |
|---|---|
Rotating partner formats, such as Ladder League and Rotating Partner Round Robin | Only the player who had the sub is skipped. Their partner and the opponents keep full credit. |
Same-partner formats, such as Round Robin (Set Partners) and Ladder League (Set Partners) | The whole team is skipped for that match, because the team is what's ranked. The opponents keep their result. |
Changing this recalculates standings straight away, including for rounds already played.
Penalize wins
Penalize wins voids exactly one game win for a team in any match where both partners played with a sub, as long as the team won at least one game. A team with only one sub is never penalized, and the opponents aren't affected.
The switch is available only for same-partner divisions scored by individual games, and only while Count substitute results is on. There's nothing to void when a sub's rounds don't count.
Choose whether a sub can move a player on the ladder
In Ladder League and Ladder League (Set Partners), you also choose whether a round played by a sub can move the rostered player between courts. Both are on by default.
In Event Settings, open Ladder League Configuration for the division.
Under When a Substitute Plays, set Can move the player up and Can move the player down.
Tap Save Configuration.
A common house rule is to turn off Can move the player up, so a sub's win can't promote someone but a loss can still drop them. A player held back from a promotion stays on their court rather than dropping a court instead. If the court has no spare place to hold them, they keep the move they earned. For the other settings in this panel, see Ladder League Configuration settings.
If you used the old per-sub options
The Win Does Not Count and Penalize Wins switches have moved out of the substitute dialog. Points Deduction and the sub's DUPR ID are still set on each sub.
Win Does Not Count is now Count substitute results, turned off. It applies to every sub in the division rather than one sub at a time.
Penalize Wins is now a single division switch. It no longer needs to be turned on for both partners.
Rounds already excluded by the old Win Does Not Count stay excluded. For upcoming rounds, turn off Count substitute results if your league relied on it, or a sub's rounds will count for the player they covered.
If your league relied on Penalize Wins, open Substitute Standings and check that the switch is on for the division.
