How to Modify Tiebreakers

When two or more players or teams have the same record, tiebreakers determine who ranks higher. Good Game Sports uses a 3-tier tiebreaker system that you can fully customize per division.

Default Tiebreaker Settings

Every division starts with these defaults:

Tier

Default Setting

What It Does

1st (Primary Sort)

Wins

Teams with more wins rank higher

2nd (Secondary Tiebreaker)

Head-to-Head

If tied on wins, the team that beat the other team ranks higher

3rd (Tertiary Tiebreaker)

Point Differential (PD)

If Head-to-Head can't break the tie, the team with a better point differential ranks higher

These defaults work well for most events. You only need to change them if your event has specific ranking preferences.

How to Change Tiebreakers

  1. Open your tournament and go to the Host Dashboard

  2. Navigate to Event Settings

  3. Find the division you want to configure

  4. Tap Customize Standings Sorting

  5. Select your preferred metric for each tier:

    • 1st Tiebreaker (Primary Sort)

    • 2nd Tiebreaker

    • 3rd Tiebreaker

  6. Save your changes

Changes take effect immediately — standings will recalculate on the next refresh (within 30 seconds).

Rules

  • Head-to-Head cannot be used as the primary sort. It only makes sense as a tiebreaker when two or more teams are already tied.

  • You cannot use the same metric twice. Each tier must use a different metric.

When to Change Tiebreakers

You can change tiebreaker settings at any time, even mid-tournament. Standings will recalculate immediately based on the new settings. However, it's best to set them before the event starts and communicate them to players so everyone knows the rules upfront.

Tip: If you're running a round robin where every team plays every other team, Head-to-Head as the secondary tiebreaker is ideal — there will always be a direct matchup to reference. If you're running a format where not all teams play each other, consider using Point Differential as the secondary instead, since Head-to-Head data may not exist between all tied teams.
