Getting started with Crazy 8's
Eight players, two courts, together for the whole day. Win and keep your partner; lose and swap. Between days, players move between groups on performance.
Start with How Crazy 8's works.
Lifecycle
1. Create the event. League across several dates, or a single day event. See Create a Crazy 8's event.
2. Add players individually — no partners to record.
3. Generate. Choose your sort; that becomes the seeding, which builds the groups and pairs round 1. See Generate rounds in Crazy 8's.
4. Check the seeds before play if ratings are unreliable. See Seeds and groups in Crazy 8's.
5. Score each round, then generate the next. Winners stay together, losers swap.
6. For leagues, start a new day — movement between groups applies, then round 1 is seeded again.
Good to know before you start
Groups are fixed for the day. All the sorting happens between your group's two courts. Group changes happen between days.
Plan around eight. Multiples of 8 divide cleanly; spares become ninth players in the lower groups, sitting out one round at a time.
You need two courts per group. 16 players means four courts running at once.
Round 1 is seeded 1&8 vs 2&7, 3&6 vs 4&5 — strongest with weakest.
Seeds are editable and persist. Your hand-set order beats the rating.
Editing groups changes the next round's logic — it pairs by seed rather than winners-stay.
How it compares
Crazy 8's | Ladder League | Up and Down the River | |
|---|---|---|---|
Group for the day | Fixed 8 | Court can change each round | Court changes each round |
What a result changes | Your partner | Your court | Your court |
Movement between groups | Between days | Every round | Every round |
Crazy 8's is the one where you stay with the same people and the partnership churns, rather than moving up and down courts.
Settings
Crazy 8's appears in Event Settings → Ladder League Configuration, where game scoring per group size is the setting most worth reviewing. See Ladder League Configuration settings.
