Common questions about groups, seeds and pairings.
Players stayed in the same group of eight from the first round to the last.
Cause: That is the format. Groups are fixed for the day — the sorting happens between the two courts inside your group, not between groups.
Fix: Nothing to fix. Movement between groups happens between days, based on how the day went.
The seeding order looks wrong compared to DUPR.
Cause: Either seeds were set by hand, or the sort you chose at generation was random rather than by rating.
Fix: Both are supported and hand-set seeds are deliberate — your order wins over the rating and persists across sessions. Open the group editor to check and adjust the numbers. See Seeds and groups in Crazy 8's.
You expected winners to stay together, but the round was paired by seed instead.
Cause: You edited groups before generating. When groups have been changed by hand, the next round uses seeded pairings based on your new order rather than carrying forward winners-stay — your edit takes precedence.
Fix: Expected. If you want winners-stay to apply, generate the next round without editing groups first.
One group is a player larger than the others.
Cause: Your roster is not a multiple of eight, so the spare players become ninth seeds. They are added to the lowest-rated groups first, keeping the top group a clean eight.
Fix: Nothing to fix. The ninth player sits out one round at a time and rotates in.
In a nine-player group, one person seems to be sitting more than their share.
Cause: The bye passes to one of the losers each round, preferring whoever has sat out fewest times. A player who keeps losing will come up as a bye candidate more often than one who keeps winning.
Fix: The sit-out count is balanced over time. If it looks badly skewed, check the round history — a player who won every round would never be a bye candidate at all, which can make the losers' sit-outs look concentrated.
The new round repeats the previous pairings.
Cause: The previous round was not scored, so there are no winners to keep together.
Fix: Score the round and generate again.
People on the roster were not scheduled.
Cause: Either they were removed from the active pool in the group editor, or — in a league — they were not opted in for that date.
Fix: Check the Excluded section of the group editor, and their opt-in status for that date. See League opt-in.
The initial seeding was wrong, or the roster changed a lot.
Cause: Normal generation preserves the existing grouping.
Fix: Use a re-sort, which re-pools every player and rebuilds groups and seeds from your chosen order. It discards the current grouping, so use it deliberately. See Generate rounds in Crazy 8's.
