Glossary of terms

Use this glossary to scan the most common tournament and league terms in Good Game Sports.

Core event terms

  • Division: A separate slice of an event with its own settings, players, and results.

  • Group: A set of players or teams that compete together inside a division, usually in pool play or ladder play.

  • Round: One scheduled cycle of matches within an event.

  • Bracket: The elimination or playoff path players follow after seeding or pool play. See Bracket formats overview for format-specific details.

  • Seeding: The order used to place players or teams into a bracket or first round based on standings, ratings, or random assignment.

  • Standings: The ranked order of players, teams, or groups based on results and tiebreakers. Learn more in How Standings Are Calculated.

  • Tiebreaker: A rule used to rank entries that finish with the same record or points. See How to Modify Tiebreakers.

Registration and match terms

  • Free agent: A player who registers without a team assignment and can be placed later.

  • Waitlist: The list of players who tried to register after an event reached capacity.

  • Check-in: The step that confirms a player is present and ready to play. See Check-in and check-out.

  • Walkover: A match that is awarded because one side does not play.

  • Bye: A round or bracket position where a player or team advances without playing.

Team terms

  • Captain: The team contact who manages roster and lineup decisions.

  • Lineup: The set of players a captain submits or rotates for a team match.

Visibility and payment terms

  • Public event: An event that is visible to players without club-only restrictions.

  • Unlisted event: An event that is not broadly visible and is only shown to people with the direct link or club admins. See Event visibility: public vs unlisted.

  • Payout: Money sent from registration revenue to the club’s connected Stripe account. Learn more in How Payouts Work.
