That's expected when the new player's rating is higher. Returning players are only guaranteed not to start below the place they finished. To change the order, move players in Edit Player Groups before play starts.
Where players start when you seed a ladder from a previous event
When you seed round 1 of a Ladder League, Up and Down the River or Cream of the Crop division From a Previous Event, returning players keep the order they finished in and nobody returning starts below the place they finished. New players are slotted in among them by rating. To set this up, see Seed the first round from a previous event.
How the order is built
The ladder fills one place at a time from the top:
If the next returning player has reached the place they finished, they take this place.
Otherwise, the highest-rated new player takes it if they are rated above the next returning player and above every returning player who finished within 4 places behind them.
Otherwise, the next returning player takes it.
Returning players never pass each other, so a new player who went above a weaker returning player would also end up above any stronger one right behind. That's why a new player waits when a stronger returning player finished close behind. Returning players further down don't hold new players back.
For example, when last season's 2nd and 3rd place teams don't come back:
Place | Team | Why |
|---|---|---|
1 | Returning, finished 1st | Can't start below 1st |
2 | New, DUPR 4.09 | Rated above the next returning team (3.89) |
3 | New, DUPR 3.92 | Rated above the next returning team (3.89) |
4 | Returning, finished 4th, DUPR 3.89 | Can't start below 4th |
5 | New, DUPR 3.82 | Rated above the next returning team (3.24, finished 7th) |
Ratings
New players with no rating start at the bottom, in random order.
A returning player with no rating can't be compared, so when they're next in line they keep their place ahead of new players.
A rating you entered for a player without DUPR counts as their rating, and a team's rating is the average of its rated partners.
Which finishing places are used
We read the earlier division's final standings, the same order its results show. For a ladder that is the final ladder. When the earlier division played in separate pools, the pool winners come first, then every second place, and so on.
Places are counted from the earlier division's results, including players who didn't come back. When you combine divisions, the places carry on from the first division into the second.
Troubleshooting the order
A new player starts above someone who finished higher last season
A new player starts below a returning player with a lower DUPR
That happens when a stronger returning player finished within 4 places behind that returning player. Returning players keep their finishing order, so the new player waits below both rather than jumping above the stronger one. To change the order, move players in Edit Player Groups before play starts.
